The construction sector in Northern Ireland has reported a 4% rise in output.

The NI Statistics & Research Agency said there had been a jump in output from building firms between the second and third quarter of last year.

Output from infrastructure work was up 19.3%, and there was 10% growth from repair and maintenance work, but housing output was down 1.8% on the previous quarter, and 16.7% lower than the same quarter in 2018.

Overall construction output was 2.7% down on the third quarter of 2018.

A partner at business advisory firm Grant Thornton said the return of the Executive could mean the release of money for previously stalled projects such as the York Street Interchange, even though the package giving NI an extra £1bn is lower than the parties had hoped for.

Neal Taylor said the Executive's return "presented a much more optimistic picture for the industry moving forward".
