Plans have been submitted for a unit at 21 Fountain Street, which was formerly The Spinning Wheel, to convert the property into six apartments and a retail unit.

They've been submitted by Kirk Bryson and Co Ltd, which counts Mr Herbert as a director.

Mr Herbert has proposed one and two-bedroom apartments on the first and second floors of the building and has plans to redevelop the ground floor, which will continue to serve as a retail unit.

The development, which will be designed by Coogan and Co Architects, adds to the KFC franchise holder's extensive property portfolio, well-known for the office properties he's named after his wife Lesley.

"The plans are geared around bringing inner city living back into Belfast," Mr Herbert said.

"Since the Troubles ended people want to live back in the city where there's activity and nightlife. There is demand for it."

Mr Herbert also revealed to the Belfast Telegraph that he has further plans for the city centre that include the conversion of his Lesley Place building on Ann Street into a similar apartment complex as that planned for Fountain Street.

The Fountain Street unit became available in November when The Spinning Wheel, which had been operating for 40 years and moved there in 2016, said it was forced to close as a result of lost trade following the Primark fire, which put it within the cordon area. Its owner Rory Curran, who had 10 employees, said more than £100,000 worth of stock was damaged by the fire and since the cordon was erected footfall dropped by 75%.

Kirk Bryson and Co Ltd is also in discussions over demolishing Westgate House at 2-4 Queen Street.

In its place it plans to build 54 studio apartments with associated landscaping and a retail unit on the ground floor.

And Mr Herbert, under his HB Building Services company, relaunched a bid for a residential complex next to George Best Belfast City Airport in January.

The new development proposes a mixture of apartments over four storeys, made up of 13 one-bed, 12 two-bed, two three-bed and three single-bed studios.

Mr Herbert is also understood to be involved in the development of luxury residential projects Lesley Grange and Rose Park near Stormont.
