A £54m hotel, office and retail scheme close the home of Primark in Belfast city centre has taken a major step forward, it can be revealed.

The plans for Norwich Union House, which occupies part of Castle Street and Fountain Street, are being brought forward by ES NUH Ltd, a development company associated with Co Tyrone construction giant McAleer and Rushe.

It would see a Norwich Union House knocked down, and an ambitious 243,000 sq ft scheme built which would include office space, retail, restaurants, cafes, bars and a 174-bedroom hotel.

Developers have previously said the proposed development would create up to 400 jobs during construction, as well as 1,500 permanent jobs, and generate around £1m in business rates when complete.

Ahead of a public consultation event earlier this year, Stephen Surphlis of ES NUH Ltd said: "We are very excited that this project will bring significant investment to this part of the city centre. We are looking forward to unlocking the potential of an area of the city that has suffered commercially as a result of the fire at Primark."
